How to Alleviate Swelling and Pain in Your Feet

Physical stress can cause swelling and pain in the feet and around the ankles. For instance, numerous individuals experience this problem after long journeys and intense exercise. In some cases, the swelling and pain can be linked to the general health status of a person. Regardless of the cause, swollen feet can compromise the quality of your life by limiting movement and causing prolonged discomfort. Here are some practical tips to help you manage and alleviate foot pain.

Consider Using Compression Socks

Compression socks can provide relief from pain and general discomfort in your feet. As implied, compression socks are designed to apply pressure to the legs, ankles and feet.  Once worn, they will minimise the collection of fluid in your lower body. Consequently, the swelling and accompanying pain will reduce. You can purchase compression socks from your local pharmacy or a similar store. When choosing the right product, you should check the different sizes and find the most suitable size for optimal results.

Establish an Exercise Program

Your feet are more likely to sustain an injury and develop pain if you do not exercise at all. In simple terms, if your feet are not used to any motion, you will experience pain after engaging in most physical activities. When you exercise, you will increase the range of motion in your joints, limiting the risk of stress and pain. You should also note that feet swell if you remain in one position for too long. So, you should take some time to stretch and walk around. Additionally, exercise promotes weight loss, lowering the pressure exerted on the feet.

Elevate Your Feet

If your feet are extremely swollen or highly painful, you might not be able to move around or exercise. In this case, you should consider propping up your legs to decrease swelling. As mentioned, fluid tends to pool at the feet and legs when you remain in one position for too long. By elevating the legs, you will help the body to drain the fluid in the legs ensuring relief. You can use an ottoman or pillows for this purpose or even prop your fit against a wall.

Ice Your Swollen Feet

The application of ice packs to swollen feet can provide considerable relief from pain. Moreover, the low temperature will reduce the inflammation of injured or stressed tissues. When icing your leg, you should remember to protect your skin from direct contact with ice. Also, consider alternating the ice with a heat pack to promote better circulation around the feet.
